Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
