At least six individuals have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a stadium in Ghana.

The Wednesday's "devastating" incident appeared to have been caused by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates," stated a release from the nation's military.

22 others were injured, among them 5 who remain in serious state.

Thousands had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, the capital, with the hope of enlisting in the military.

The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and frequently result in chaotic scenes.

The closing date to submit applications for this recruitment was extended by a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had faced challenges in the process.

Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede occurred ahead of the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President John Mahama has gone to see the wounded in hospital.

Calm has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has now begun.
